From the desk of the Grand Knight..... I’m the current Grand Knight for Manitowoc Council #710, and I’d like to tell you a bit about who we are and what we do. The Knights of Columbus are a Catholic family fraternal service organization founded in 1882 by Fr. Michael J. McGiveny in New Haven, Connecticut. Manitowoc Council #710 was founded in 1902. Who are the Knights of Manitowoc Council #710? We are your neighbors, your relatives, and your friends. We are your coaches, your teachers, and your co-workers. Simply put we are the Catholic men of your community working to support our local parishes, local charities, and local families. Some of the charities we support locally are the Sisters of St. Joseph and Holiday House. In conjunction with the State Council, we provide disaster relief to local victims of fires. We also have several youth programs including: Punt, Pass & Kick, Free Throw, Essay for Life, Christmas Poster, and Knowledge contests. Every spring you’ll see us outside your local department and grocery stores collecting money for the Mentally Retarded. Your generosity is rewarded with a delicious Tootsie Roll! The Knights of Columbus boasts 1.6 million members worldwide. We are proud of the work that we do at the Supreme, State, and Council level. The Supreme Council recently donated $2.5 million dollars to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. The Wisconsin State Council donated $5,000 to the State Councils of Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana for disbursement to Katrina victims at the local level. Additionally, the Wisconsin State Council donated $5,000 to the Stoughton Council for the tornado victims there. The Supreme Council donated $500,000 to victims of the Asian Tsunami, and over $1,000,000 to victims of the 9-11 attacks. The Knights of Columbus relies on its membership in order to do what we do. We could do so much more if we had more members! I ask that you consider joining the Manitowoc Knights of Columbus. The rewards for service are too numerous to mention, so I’ll just mention a few. First, there is the satisfaction of knowing you’ve given back a few of the blessings God has accorded you. Second, you’ll have the opportunity to meet good Catholic men of Manitowoc. Finally, you’ll know that you’ve made a difference, not only for your Church, not only for your country, but especially right here in Manitowoc. Thank you for visiting our site. Please don’t hesitate to call or e-mail the Knights for more information. -Al Forner |
